About WingXpand
WingXpand is Expanding What’s Possible™ with Autonomous Systems with our 8ft smart plane that expands from a backpack to help farmers grow more yield, public safety crews respond to disasters faster, and keep soldiers safe.
We’re a rapidly growing, Techstars-backed startup that is creating the future of smart, connected, robotics. We want you to play a key role in our journey!
Position Description
This isn't a typical electrical engineering role. We don't just design on paper; we build, test, and fly advanced VTOL and fixed-wing aircraft. We are looking for a tenacious engineer who thrives on solving the hard problems—the kind that are ambiguously defined but have a massive impact on our success. You will be empowered to take ownership of critical electrical systems, rapidly moving from concept to creation on tight deadlines. You'll do this as a key member of a tight-knit, energized team of robotics experts from multiple disciplines, where your work directly enables and accelerates theirs. If you are a hands-on builder who is as comfortable with a soldering iron as you are writing firmware for the board you just designed, we want to talk to you.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own Hardware from Concept to Code: You will drive the entire lifecycle for critical aircraft electronics. This means translating requirements into schematics, leading PCB layout, and then bringing your own boards to life. You will write the low-level firmware (C/C++), perform the initial board bring-up, and develop the code that makes your hardware perform its mission.
- Roll Up Your Sleeves and Build: This is a hands-on role. You will be physically wiring, soldering, and assembling prototypes. You'll build test harnesses, troubleshoot hardware on the bench and on the aircraft, and implement design improvements in real-time.
- Solve System-Level Challenges: As the electrical engineering lead on cross-functional projects, you will work intimately with our mechanical, software, and autonomy experts. You'll ensure seamless integration, optimize for Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP), and ruggedize systems (IPXX standards) for real-world conditions.
- Tackle High-Energy Power Systems: Design, integrate, and validate high power density and high current discharge battery solutions. You will be instrumental in ensuring the performance, safety, and endurance of our aircraft's core power system.
- Validate and Fly: You will support system validation through rigorous environmental testing (thermal, vibration, EMI/EMC) and be directly involved in field operations and flight testing, seeing the immediate results of your work.
Qualifications:
- A Proven Problem-Solver: You have 8+ years of relevant experience in a field like aerospace, robotics, or automotive. You have a track record of being handed a difficult, loosely-defined problem and delivering a robust solution.
- A Hardware Expert Who Writes Code: You have deep expertise across the EE stack. You're fluent in a primary PCB design tool (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, KiCad) and equally proficient in writing the C/C++ firmware to make that hardware function.
- Comfortable with Ambiguity and Pace: You excel at taking a high-level goal and translating it into concrete engineering tasks, even when the path isn't perfectly clear. You understand the urgency of a startup environment and can deliver under pressure.
- A Systems Thinker: You instinctively understand that a single component choice can impact the entire aircraft's performance, from power budget and EMI to flight endurance and reliability.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, building, and programming complex electronic systems from prototype to production.
- Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout software.
- Hands-on experience with soldering, wiring, and using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.).
- Strong experience with embedded systems programming in C or C++.
Additional qualifications:
- Experience with high-density, high-current battery systems and battery management systems (BMS).
- FAA Part 107 certification or a passion for flying drones/RC aircraft.
- Experience with RF systems, antenna design, or communication protocols.
- Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE or MATLAB.
What Else You Need to Know
To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations, applicant must be a 'U.S. Person' (U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident/Green Card Holder).
We offer a competitive package based on level of experience, including the possibility of WingXpand stock options and advancement opportunities as the company expands.
